RAAF Defence Base – Edinburgh
Client: Department of Defence
Project: R8111 – AIR555-1 AISREW Facilities
Location: Hangar AIR555-1, RAAF Base Edinburgh
Project Type: Jet Fuel Vapour Monitoring System
Delivered by: KD Fisher
KD Fisher was selected to design, supply, install, and commission a Hydrocarbon Detection System for the AIR555-1 Hangar at RAAF Base Edinburgh—home to the MC-55A Peregrine aircraft. This mission-critical facility required a robust and responsive system to detect jet fuel vapours (JP-4, JP-5, JP-8), ensuring the safety of personnel and assets in the event of a fuel leak or spillage.
Project Objectives:
- Provide early warning detection of hazardous jet fuel vapours.
- Minimise the risk of ignition and catastrophic incidents within the hangar.
- Deliver a fully automated, PLC-controlled sampling system with real-time monitoring and alert capabilities.
- Integrate seamlessly with emergency response protocols and operational workflows.
System Overview:
The installed system includes:
- 2 x Main Control Panels (Eastern & Western sides of the hangar)
- 3 x Sampling Pipes embedded in floor drains spanning the hangar width
- Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) with HMI touchscreen interface
- Vacuum pumps, solenoids, flow switches, and water traps for continuous sampling
- TVOC2 PID Detector for precise hydrocarbon vapour measurement
The system operates on a 30-second sampling cycle, rotating through each drain to ensure constant environmental monitoring. All components are housed in a rugged, industrial-grade enclosure with intuitive HMI controls for maintenance and diagnostics.
Commissioning & Operation:
KD Fisher executed a detailed commissioning process, including:
- Power-up and functional testing of all control panel components
- Verification of sampling flow rates and detector responsiveness
- System tuning and calibration to ensure accurate detection thresholds
- Full operational handover and training for Defence personnel
Outcome:
The Hydrocarbon Detection System now provides continuous, automated protection for one of Australia’s most advanced airborne ISR facilities. KD Fisher’s delivery of this high-stakes project demonstrates our capability to engineer and implement specialised safety systems in defence-grade environments, with precision, compliance, and reliability.
